John Campbell: Should Paul Henry be sacked?

Short on time this morning so a quick post.

John Campbell ran a text poll last night from 6.30 to 7.30 which was responded to by 29,000 (from memory): Should Paul Henry be sacked?

The result was 41 percent said yes and 59 percent, including me, said no.

The site is also polling and the yes/no split is currently at 35/65.

Paul Henry is a very funny man. Sometimes he laughs at things that I don't find funny. Like a lone donkey being hoisted up and flown out to sea under a para-glider. Some say the way he behaves is 'inappropriate' for his role. But what is his role? Breakfast TV seems to be a work in progress to me. It's still a relatively new phenomenon. If Henry wasn't on it I'd find no reason to watch. In the same way as when he left Radio Pacific I stopped listening.

How sad you find him funny. I think he is a very UNFUNNY man. His humour is always used to ridicule those less fortunate and to pander to the prejudices of his audience.

Of course he shouldn't be sacked, if only to upset and annoy the PC mob even more.

He does sometimes say things I find distasteful, but I do watch breakfast TV because he is on it.

He is a breath of fresh air when contrasted with the dreary patronising pro-statist editorialising of Mark Sainsbury, Simon Dallow and others.

They'd be crazy to sack him. I'm told oldies, his main audience, love his style.. "ooh, isn't he a naughty boy' kind of thing. And why shouldn't they? As for the pc handwringers, grow up or piss off. mara.

Sky would take him,and his audience in a flash if TVNZ dropped him and all parties know it.....and whos going to cancel the Sky subscription over Henry? What else is there to watch?

Lindsay, did you laugh loudly when he made his nasty little remarks about Sheila Dikshit and others he thought deserving of his wit?

I certainly grinned and had a bit of a titter....mainly at Henrys boyish take on the thing rather than the name itself.Hes a child at heart...and good on him.He sees things with the fresh innocence of a kid bemused by the strangeness of the world and the people in it.We need more people like him...not less.

And many Indians et el have a great laugh at many Westen names like "Dick","Hooker" and "Smelly" so its all fair as they say.Even many Indians find the Dikshit thing funny too and they get why we find it amusing.

Sour,po faced killjoys can't understand that nor handle Henry but who cares what they think?

Imagine your last name was Dikshit.
You have lived the whole of your life being made fun of and ridiculed.then some tv reporter makes fun of your name infront of the whole world.

Is it still funny?

Its not funny but then again our freedom to be offended can never trump the right of someone to free speech.
