Another pen!

At the risk of seeming ungrateful isn't it a bit of an anachronism awarding pens for letter-writing? A new keyboard might be more useful.

Seriously, the recognition from the Sunday Star Times is very much appreciated;

Footnote; An Adelaide-based study, "the most comprehensive of its kind" published in the latest Medical Journal of Australia finds foster children suffer up to five times more mental health problems than children living with their own families. "Severe disruptive behaviour is of a particular concern....."

Good letter Lindsay. With the unrelenting growth of social problems in western countries, I believe it will only be a matter of time before people make a U-turn in their thinking on welfare as they did with smoking (they'll probably over-react this time too).

I would encourage you to go further in one respect. "In the worst case scenario, life-threatening abuse, yes, remove the child.". No, remove the abuser. If the adults of the house won't identify the abuser, apply the Kay Skelton method: Detain all the males of the house indefinately for contempt. If the abuse continues, let the males go and detail all the females. If the abuse stops, release the suspects one-by one over a period of time until the abuse restarts, etc.
